When an eSIM doesn't work, it feels worse than a normal phone problem, because you're often in a new country with no other way to look anything up. The good news is that most eSIM problems come from a handful of settings, and you can fix almost all of them without deleting anything. The most important rule: don't remove the eSIM profile until support tells you it can be reinstalled. Most eSIMs can only be installed once.
Start with the five quick checks, then jump to the symptom that matches what you see.
Five Quick Checks
- Is the plan active and in range? Confirm it has data left, hasn't expired, and covers the country you're in.
- Is the eSIM line on and selected for mobile data? On iPhone, look for Turn On This Line. On Android, check SIM manager or SIM settings.
- Does the plan need Data Roaming? Your setup screen says whether to turn it on for the eSIM line. Some plans don't need it.
- Reset the connection. Toggle Airplane Mode for about 30 seconds, then restart the phone.
- Test properly. Turn Wi-Fi off and load a simple web page on mobile data.
Symptom 1: The eSIM Won't Install
Make sure you're on stable internet, that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked, and that you're adding the eSIM through the SIM settings. Then check:
- Direct install fails or isn't available: the setup screen may tell you your iOS version or device doesn't support direct installation. Use the QR code method instead, or enter the details manually.
- The code is rejected: the activation code may already have been used, or one character was entered wrongly. Copy and paste the details instead of typing them.
- The message says the code is invalid or expired: contact support with the exact wording of the message.
Follow the step-by-step guide for your phone: iPhone, Samsung or Google Pixel. If you're unsure your phone qualifies, check our guide to eSIM compatibility and unlock status.
Symptom 2: Installed, but No Signal
- Check that the country is on your plan's coverage list, and that you've actually arrived. Yatelo's validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network.
- Give the phone a few minutes to register, especially after landing.
- Check network selection. If the setup screen tells you to, turn off Automatic and choose a supported network from the list.
- Move outdoors or to a window. Indoor signal can be weak in some buildings.
Symptom 3: Signal Bars, but No Internet
This is the most common case, and it's usually a settings problem.
- Confirm the eSIM is the selected mobile data line, not the home SIM.
- Check roaming on the right line. Turn it on for the eSIM only if the plan needs it. Keep it off for your home line. Our guide to data roaming on a travel eSIM explains the difference. Apple documents its controls in its cellular roaming guidance, and Google in its mobile data guide.
- Check the APN. On most Yatelo plans it's set automatically, but if your plan documentation lists a manual APN, enter it exactly.
- Turn off any VPN for a moment to rule it out.
- Check the plan balance and validity again.
Symptom 4: Slow or Dropping Data
Speed depends on signal, congestion, the type of network, the building you're in, and whether the phone is hot. Try another spot, close large background transfers such as backups, and try automatic network selection if you changed it. A speed test uses data of its own, so don't run it repeatedly. Some plans have speed or fair-use terms, so read yours.
Symptom 5: The Wrong Line Is Being Used
If you have a home SIM and a travel eSIM, label them both and choose the travel eSIM for data. Turn off automatic data switching if you don't want the phone falling back to your home plan. Check your home carrier's bill if you suspect it did. Our Dual SIM guide walks through the setup.
What Not to Do
- Don't delete the eSIM as a first fix. You may not be able to reinstall it.
- Don't share your QR code, activation code or EID anywhere public.
- Don't factory-reset the phone just to make the Add eSIM option appear. If your phone's maker and carrier say it doesn't support eSIM, a reset won't change that.
What to Send Support
- Your order number, without full payment details.
- Your phone model, software version and current country.
- The exact error message or a screenshot with sensitive details hidden.
- Whether installation, signal or data is failing.
- The selected data line, roaming state, APN and any networks you tried.
- When the problem began and what you've already tried.

Frequently Asked Questions About eSIM Problems
Why does my eSIM show signal but no internet?
Usually a settings issue. Check that the eSIM is the selected mobile-data line, that roaming is set correctly for that line, and that the APN is right. Then toggle Airplane Mode and restart.
Should I delete my eSIM and reinstall it?
Not as a first step. Most eSIMs can only be installed once, so deleting it may leave you without service. Contact support before you remove it.
Why won't my QR code scan?
Use the phone's SIM settings to scan it, not the normal camera. Check that the code hasn't been used already, or enter the details manually instead.
Why is my eSIM slow?
Signal, congestion, building materials and the plan's speed terms all affect it. Try another location and close large background transfers.
Do I need to turn on Data Roaming for an eSIM?
Only if your plan's setup screen says so. Some plans don't need it, and you should keep it off on your home line.
